BATTLE OF MIDWAY

Battle of Midway a five-year-old horse by Smart Strike out of Rigoletta trained by hall of fame trainer Jerry Hollendofer and owned by WinStar Farm and Don Alberto Stable. Battle of Midway is a multiple graded stakes winner with wins in Affirmed G3, Native Diver Handicap G2, San Pasqual Stakes G2, and the Breeder’s Cup Dirt Mile G1. Battle of Midway or BOM as he is known around the track raced at the highest caliber throughout his three years of racing accumulating Grade 1 placings including a third in the 2017 Kentucky Derby G1 to Always Dreaming. He won one of the four Grade 1 events he entered in with his winning effort coming in the Breeder’s Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar against older horses to close out his sophomore season. BOM then shipped across the country to WinStar Farm in Kentucky to take up stud duty the following year. He was found to be subfertile being only able to impregnate five of the mares he covered so WinStar sent him back to Jerry’s barn in California where BOM returned to training for a four-year-old campaign. BOM raced five times as a four-year-old with a 2-2-0 all in graded company. Battle of Midway had his five-year-old debut at Santa Anita Park on February 2nd in the San Pasqual Stakes G2 going a 1 1/8 m over the main track. Also, in that race was multiple grade 1 winning four-year-old Mckinzie coming off a domain win in the Malibu G1 over the same track just a few weeks earlier. BOM and Mckinzie dueled down the stretch neither letting up until the final few strides BOM pulled ahead it to win it by a neck. This race showed the true class BOM exhibited that made him such an incredible horse to watch run. Following this gutsy win, it was announced Battle of Midway would ship to Dubai in March and contest the Dubai World Cup Group 1 at Meydan Racecourse. Unfortunately, the San Pasqual was the final time BOM would set foot in a starting gate the Breeder’s Cup winner broke down suffering a broken pastern in his hind leg during a timed workout across the Santa Anita main track February 23 and had to be euthanized. His memory will be carried on by the five foals he was able to produce four fillies and single colt. A favorite among many for his athleticism and beauty and all-around kind nature BOM will be missed dearly by the racing community across the globe.
